About Me

My name is Marilú Medina. I love words. I love writing, reviewing, ideating, and editing. I love helping aspiring college students submit the best application possible to the colleges and universities of their dreams. I love ensuring that in doing so, they manifest the best version of themselves: their authentic selves.

I graduated from Brown University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and earned a Juris Doctor from Boston College School of Law. I have been a successful attorney for 30+ years – 25 of those working for a Fortune 100 company. You can learn more about my career at https://linkedin.com/in/marilumedina.

Effective writing has been my most important life skill. I was an excellent high school student but wasn’t at the top of my class. I neither had excellent SAT scores nor outstanding extracurriculars and honors. Still, I was admitted to three (3) Ivy League institutions (Brown, Princeton, and UPenn) and multiple highly competitive colleges. I am convinced that my college essays positively influenced my acceptance to these prestigious institutions. They were genuine, persuasive, and well-written. My essays helped colleges understand how my authentic self would contribute to their academic community. Writing has been a constant in my life – not only for work.

I love journaling, and a few years ago, I launched my blog Pretérito Imperfecto – an unfiltered account about my imperfect life. I have also helped many other students with their college and graduate school essays, including my adult daughters. All have been accepted into highly competitive programs, including Ivy League universities.

For many years, I also interviewed Brown University applicants and always submitted a thoughtfully written assessment of my interaction with the student to the admissions office. My conversations with the students were lengthy, as it was truly important to me to describe the applicants’ interests and personalities in writing.

I’ve retired from corporate life and finally have time to pursue my dream of helping college applicants submit essays that manifest their authentic selves. That is why College Essay Magic was born.

Why are essays so critical to college applications? Most colleges no longer require standardized testing as part of their application post-pandemic. You need more than good grades and extracurriculars to get you into the college of your dreams. Admissions get more competitive every year, and when an admissions office is presented with applicants with similar credentials, they will undoubtedly look very closely at college essays. This is the space where students can tell colleges, “This is who I am,”; “This is how I will add value to your academic community”; “This is why you should accept me.”

Beyond supporting college-bound students, I also provide the following services: general résumé drafting/staging; graduate school application essays; speechwriting; cover letters; proposals; script writing; English-Spanish translations...and support with any other writing needs!
